Summer is right around the corner. This means more festivals, farmers markets and time at the beach. Summer 2016 is going to be one to remember — don’t stay inside! Get out and see what your Hampton Roads has to offer. This week is full of arts, history, music, and food!


May 9: Learn Pottery

Come get your hands dirty and learn how to throw pottery on the wheel and finish your work with glazes with a class at Orzo Studio in Olde Towne Portsmouth!


May 9: Boyce Avenue

After you get artistic with pottery fun, grab the girls and head over to the NorVa and rock out with Boyce Avenue. Fill your Monday with music, drinks and friends!


May 11: Storytelling

Looking for fun on a budget? Look no further! The Muse Writers Center is hosting an evening of storytelling! Come enjoy a great meal and three inspiring and entertaining readings by the talented students and professional writers. If you like poetry, fiction, and memoir/nonfiction, this evening will not disappoint!


May 12: The Struts

The NorVa never rests…and The Struts are here. Come out to this fun and eclectic venue in the middle of Downtown Norfolk for music, beer, and endless hits!


May 12: Work|Release

If a concert doesn’t suit your fancy, then maybe an art show will. Join Work|Release in Norfolk, Va for the opening of IRIDESCENCE, the Governor’s School For The Arts Senior show.


May 13: Starving Artist Studio

It’s Friday night and we’ll bet you are ready for a night on the town. The Starving Artist Studio in Newport News is having a parents night out evening, where you can safely drop your kids off and let them create while you go out on a nice date. Lot’s of great restaurants are right around the corner!


May 14: War Museum

March on down to the Virginia War Museum this Saturday! Here they will be hosting their 15th annual Toy Soldier Show 9 am – 4 pm. Vendors will be selling antique & contemporary toy soldiers and miniatures in the museum’s galleries. Historical miniature kits & models in metal and plastic will also be for sale. Door prize drawings and war games for kids of all ages will also be running throughout the day!


May 15: This Festival Is Kosher

Join the United Jewish Community of the Virginia Peninsula for a day of celebrating Jewish food and culture, at the Jewish Food Festival. Enjoy an extensive menu of delicious Jewish food, musical acts, entertainers, Israeli and Judaica shopping from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


May 15: Special Day for Special Needs

Also on this day, we are celebrating a Special day for Special needs at the Portsmouth Museums. Children 12 and under with special needs will have access to modified exhibits, adaptive materials, plus art and history programming for a morning all to their own. Participating museums include the Children’s Museum of Virginia, Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center, and the Lightship Portsmouth Museum.
